Interview with Zareeka

How long have you been in Chengdu/China and how long do you plan to stay?

I’ve been in Chengdu for 6 months and in China for 6 months. I plan on making China my forever home.

Why did you choose to come to Chengdu/Sichuan and what do you like most about this part of China?

At first I was open to moving any where in China,  but after doing research about Chengdu I thought this would be a better option.  I never seen pandas before and the big Buddha in Leshan captured me.  The nature scenes were a bonus.

Where do you teach/have been teaching and what age groups? What are the good and bad sides of that age group?

I teach in 3 different areas.  Two are in Shuangliu and one near Peoples Park.  They are all primary schools but I teach different age groups.  In all I teach  1st-6th grade.  the good side is the kids are more easily entertained and learn faster.  The down side is the amount of energy needed everyday and the lack of energy.
What has been the most rewarding part of this experience and what will you do next?
The best and more rewarding part has been breaking stereotypes of black/dark skinned people in China. Hopefully by March of next year my boyfriend and I will be married and I can have a better understanding of Chinese culture.
Would you recommend coming to live and teach in Chengdu?
I’ve already convinced three of my friends to move to Chengdu next year.  Selfish reasons of being close to me and also because I love my city.
